Teething

Q: How can i comfort my 4 month old that is teething?

A:

  • Wipe baby’s face often with a cloth to remove the drool and prevent rashes from developing.
  • Give your baby something to chew on. Make sure it’s big enough so that he or she can’t swallow it and that it can’t break into small pieces. A wet washcloth placed in the freezer for 30 minutes makes a handy teething aid – just be sure to wash it after each use. *Rubber teething rings are also good, but avoid the ones with liquid inside because   they may break. If you use a teething ring, be sure to take it out of the freezer before it becomes rock hard – you don’t want to bruise those already swollen gums!
  • Rub your baby’s gums with a clean finger.
  • Never tie a teething ring around a baby’s neck, as it could get caught on something and strangle the baby.
  • If your baby seems irritable, acetaminophen may help – but always consult your child’s doctor first. Never place an aspirin against the tooth, and don’t rub whiskey on your baby’s gums.
  • Taking care of a tooth

Q: My baby is 5 months old and she has 1 visible tooth. How do i care for this tooth? Can i use toothpaste?

    A:

1.Wipe your baby’s gums daily with a clean, damp washcloth or gauze,

        or

    2. Brush them gently with a soft, infant-sized toothbrush and water (no toothpaste!). As soon as the first tooth appears, brush them with water.

    3. Toothpaste is OK to use on your child’s teeth once he or she gets old enough to spit it out – usually around age 3. Choose one with fluoride and use only a pea-sized amount or less in younger children. Don’t let your child swallow the toothpaste or eat it out of the tube because an overdose of fluoride can be harmful for children.

4.By the time all your baby’s teeth are in, it’s a good idea to brush your child’s teeth at least twice a day, and especially after meals.

    5. Another important tip for preventing tooth decay: don’t let your baby fall asleep with a bottle. The milk or juice can pool in her mouth and cause tooth decay and plaque.

*The American Dental Association recommends that children see a dentist by age 1, when six to eight teeth are in place, to spot any potential problems and advise parents about preventive care.

    Comforting Baby

    Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Q: In which position can i comfort my crying baby?

    A:

    Try a New Position

  • Hold your baby facedown over your forearm with his head at your elbow and your thumb and fingers wrapped around his thigh.
  • Hold your baby seated in your hand with his back to your chest and your other hand across his chest, wrapping your thumb and fingers around his upper arm.
  • Hold your baby high over your shoulder so his stomach is being pressed into your shoulder bone.
  • Cradle your baby in your arms, holding him tummy-to-tummy tightly against you.
  • Crying & refusing

Q:  I have a problem with my son who is eight years old. He is in second grade and for three weeks he has been crying every morning. He says school is too long and he misses me alot. I have talked to the teacher and a social worker at his school and they say he is fine when he gets to school. I am extremly concerned and do not know what to do. Could you please give me any suggetions on how I should handle it? I am to the point that I am ready to take him to a child therapist.

    A:

A number of things could be going on with him; but since he is doing well while at school, the problem with crying at home should ease over the next few weeks.

Without interrogating him, see if you can pick up some clues about what is worrying him. Sometimes you can pinpoint a certain trigger for the anxiety. Often it is a combination of factors at home and school that lead to the anxiety related to school avoidance. Stresses at home may lead him to worry about leaving you. Or, fears and worries about certain aspects of school may be the triggers.

If you think that he has overheard something at home that has him worried, find some ways to reassure him that you are just fine. Don’t oversympathize when he says he misses you. Instead, be matter-of-fact about going to school while you maintain good structure and familiar routines at home.

Ask him about a variety of activities at school. Does he worry about going to the bathroom? Is there an atmosphere of strict punishment in the school or classroom? Does he have playmates in his class? Are there problems with bullies? Again, don’t interrogate him about school. Simply talk about his day and listen for clues that might tell you why “school is too long”.

If the problem continues or worsens, by all means, take him to a child therapist. You don’t want to let his anxiety build without addressing it. School avoidance can have serious consequences in the short and long term. He’s young and he misses you; that’s understandable. But, crying every morning isn’t good for anyone. If it continues, a good counselor can make a world of difference for you and your child.

    Cheese For Baby

    Monday, January 28th, 2008

Q: Can i feed cheese to my 10 month old baby?

    A:

Cheeses are typically offered to the non-allergic baby between 8 and 10 months of age.  If your baby has a known or suspected dairy allergy (either a milk protein or lactose intolerance) then you should wait to introduce cheese and other dairy when your infant is older.

As always, please consult your baby’s pediatrician about introducing cheese to your baby as generalities may not apply!

You can introduce cheese to your baby by offering the lighter tasting cheeses (Colby, Jack, American) as well as offering cottage cheese!

AVOID SOFT CHEESE eg. Brie, Feta, Camembert, Roquefort, and Bleu Cheese

    Coughing & vomiting

    Monday, January 28th, 2008

Q: My daughter is 6 months old and has recently started coughing. Her cough is so bad that she coughs till vomits.Sometimes her milk feeds are vomited out.Is this serious?

    A:

There are many kinds of coughs when it comes to babies and child.

Looks like your baby’s cough is what we call a ‘Cough with vomiting’.

If it is persistent, please see a Peadiatric as she need to be examined.

‘Cough withvomiting’ is caused because the infant often cough so much that it triggers their gag reflex, making them throw up. Usually,it is not to be alarmed unless the vomitting persists.

Also, if your child has a cough with flu or asthma at the Also, if your child has a cough with a cold or an asthma flare-up, he or she may throw up if lots of mucus drains into the stomach and causes nausea.

    Baby seat

    Friday, January 25th, 2008

Q: When do i purchase a rear-facing convertable child seat?

    A:

A convertible seat is used in the rear-facing position from birth until your baby is heavier and taller-(usually up to 30-35 pounds). It can then be switched to face forward.

Check the seat instruction manual or seat label for weight and height limits.

Convertible seats have more than one harness slot so you can adjust the harness as your child grows. When used rear-facing, the harness straps need to be put through slots at or below your child’s shoulders.

Once your infant reaches at least 1 year and at least 20 pounds, the seat may be turned forward-facing and used until he reaches about 40 pounds.

Note however that your child should remain rear-facing until reaching the max weight for his child safety seat, as long as the top of his head is below the top of the seat back. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children should remain rear-facing as long as possible until at least 1 year and at least 20 pounds.

    Using the harness correctly
Convertible seats use several different types of harnesses:

    • 5-point harness. This common type buckles between  legs and uses two straps to hold the baby at shoulders and 2 straps holding the hips.
    • Tray or overhead shield. A padded bar swings over your baby’s head and buckles between her legs. These shields may not protect smaller infants well enough because they are positioned high relative to a child’s size.
    • T-shield. This less common seat has a” “T” or triangular plastic piece permanently attached to the shoulder straps and rests on the abdomen. Because this shield is stiff, it may not make full contact with your child’s body, especially in smaller babies.
